Siping Zhang, is a research assistant for the Green Light-Year Youth Program. He was born in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the “land of fish and rice”. Growing up in a city with abundant food resources has made him appreciate food resources; at the same time, Suzhou City has a large number of technological enterprises helping the city to transform into a sustainable city, which makes him have a strong interest in the transformation of sustainable food systems. At the same time, the large number of tech companies in Suzhou that are helping the city to transition to sustainable development has made him interested in the transformation of a sustainable food system, with a particular focus on the application of digital technology in agricultural production.

In July 2023, Siping Zhang participated in the “Follow the Cambridge Masters to the Grocery Store” event organized by Green Light Years, learning about the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and exploring in-depth SDG2: Zero Hunger, SDG8: Economic Growth and Decent Work, SDG11: Industrial Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Responsible Consumption and Production.

During a trip to the vegetable market, Zhang and his companions encountered an irresponsible producer – a stall owner selling stinky meat – and followed the market feedback process to reflect the “stinky meat incident” to the market manager in a reasonable and legal manner. In the end, they were able to protect their own consumer rights and help the market manager gain access to the working conditions of the frontline producers, which helped the market manager to better manage the behavioral standards of the market stallholders (producers). From top to bottom, it helps all stallholders to become a responsible producer. “At the end of the activity, Spencer also learned about the concept of “responsible consumer” and realized that “complaint” is not a derogatory term in the consumer environment, but a good way to improve the quality of life for many people. It is a “positive” verb that helps many people to improve themselves.
